GMR Airports Ltd bags international greenfield airport project at Bhogapuram near Visakhapatnam
New Delhi: GMR Airports Ltd will develop international greenfield airport spread over 2200 acres of land at Bhogapuram near Visakhapatnam.
The Andhra Pradesh Government has signed a deal with GMR Airports Ltd for the development of the airport.
The new airport is expected to see passengers numbers of 3.1 million by 2021. The same is expected to reach nine million by 2036. GMR Airports Ltd will pay Rs 303 per passenger fee to the state government. The airport is envisaged to be completed by 2023.
Bhogapuram lies 40 kilometer northeast from Visakhapatnam. An airport at Bhogapuram was proposed in 2014 right when Andhra was bi-furcated to create Telangana. But the project was stuck for about 6 years due to some reason or the other.
Airports Authority of India had even won the bid for the project in 2017 but the state government had cancelled the agreement with AAI in January 2018.
